Labour Day has a long and eventful history. It all started back in the end of the civil war 1865, when the American factory workers first demanded an eight-hour workday. Until then they’ve had beside the poor payment and the health-endangered working conditions a 14-hour working day. As the people’s dissatisfaction grew every day, the working conditions remained poor and the demands of the workers – ignored, which led to a general strike. The biggest strike took place on May 1, 1886 in Chicago. The heated mood among the demonstrators led to a bloody confrontation with the police, which cost the life of some demonstrators. But that was not everything. The vicious circle ended with a bomb explosion organized from the anarchists and the left-radical. Despite the lack of a happy ending, 1 May has continued to be considered as the International Labour Day in many countries.
Meanwhile, the symbolism of the holiday has changed a bit. Nowadays, not only the demands of the workers, but the workers, the people themselves are at the center of it. Especially the importance of the individual and his role in the field of work are celebrated. All the efforts and the hard work are honored on this day.
