Once upon a time back in the third century, St. Valentine was a priest in the Roman Empire. He was very beloved because he not only inspired the people on a daily basis, but he also used to gift them with unconditional love and flowers from his own garden. Furthermore, he was marring the young enamored couples. That however didn’t seem to please the ambitious Emperor Claudius II, because he wanted all young, strong men to be devoted to the army and his war aims. For this reason, he released a new state law forbidding the marriage.
However, the rebel priest Valentine continued secretly to marry the young couples and by this he was violating the law of the Imperator. Although he was enjoying a high reputation by the Emperor, this costed him his life. His commitment to the true love and to the divine act of connecting two people forever became a deadly curse. The exact date of his death was February 14th, 269. The night before February the 14th he wrote a secret love letter and sent it. That was the last act of his life. This is where the most famous tradition on Valentine’s Day comes from – sending anonymous love letters. One hundred years later Valentin was canonized. His self-sacrificing acts are the origins of today’s Valentine’s Day.
